Basic Types Of Leveling Instruments
Leveling instruments are used in a branch of surveying that calculates the elevation of a particular point in relation with a given data and establishes a point at a particular elevation with the aid of an assumed datum. By using optical leveling instruments, the extent of geodetic height is measured. A rod or level staff with numbered scales could also be designed. The most common instruments used for leveling in surveying are the dumpy level, spirit level and the PLS laser level.
Types Of Leveling Instruments
- Dumpy Or Automatic Level
This level is an optical instrument that is used in building and surveying. It helps in setting horizontal levels and transferring measurements in buildings and surveys. Dumpy levels are old leveling instruments and you need to have the skill to correctly set the instrument. The instrument must be level on all quadrants so that the entire 360 degree traverse could be maintained accurately. There are dumpy level designs that are incorporated with a bubble level to achieve perfection and accuracy. In calculating the measurement, an arbitrary point or benchmark with established height should be used.
- Bubble Or Spirit Level
To establish whether a particular surface is level or not, the bubble level is used. The original levels utilize curved glass vials that are shaped like bananas at each view point. The structure is rather complicated. The level would be placed in such a manner that the tripod is at the center of two points and the difference in height between the points could be easily calculated. Markers are used to mark the points. At each point, a leveling rod with measured graduations is set. The viewer focus would be pointed on each and the values could be known from it.
- Laser Level
This kind of level is attached to a tripod. It is then leveled and spun to light up a horizontal plane. The projector for the laser beam is composed of a revolving head that is incorporated with a mirror. Level vials that can be read visually and an adjustable screw for adjusting the projector is incorporated in the laser level for maximum performance.
- Digital Level
This instrument uses a special kind of rod scale that is used in calculating height. The ability to record data is a main feature of the digital level. It aims to take the operator’s job of reading a scale to reduce the errors that could happen. Curvature and refraction corrections could be done easily with digital leveling instruments.
